Deadly Attack During School Mass

On August 27, 2025, a tragic incident unfolded at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, when a former student, Robin Westman, carried out a mass shooting during the school’s first Mass of the year.

The attacker opened fire, killing two children and injuring 10 others, including six children and two adults. Authorities confirmed that all injured victims are expected to survive, though some remain in critical condition.

Shooter’s Background

Police identified the attacker as Robin Westman, a transgender former student who had attended the school through eighth grade. Westman, born Robert Paul Westman, legally changed the name in 2019. Officials revealed that the attacker’s mother once worked at the school, giving Westman familiarity with the campus.

Armed with a rifle, pistol, and shotgun—all legally purchased—Westman attempted to enter through the main door, which had been barricaded. Unable to breach it, Westman opened fire before taking their own life.

Attack Was Premeditated

Investigators discovered that Westman had planned the shooting in advance, deliberately choosing August 27 because it coincided with an all-school mass. A disturbing journal entry dated July 25 suggested the attacker intended to maximize casualties among children by targeting the school during a major gathering.

According to U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson, “The attacker’s intent was to cause maximum suffering. The words used in planning were horrific and vile.”

Victims and Hospitalization

  • Children’s Minnesota Hospital confirmed three pediatric patients remain admitted.

  • Hennepin Healthcare treated eight more victims, including six children.

  • Four children have already been discharged after treatment.

Law Enforcement Findings

Authorities are also investigating claims about Westman’s possible ties to extremist groups. The FBI confirmed the attacker was born male and later identified as female. Officials are reviewing personal writings to determine if others were involved.
