Air Canada Faces Backlash Over New Carry-On Bag Fees for Budget Travelers
Dubai | December 11, 2024 | 0 | newsAir Canada has announced a new policy that will charge additional fees for carry-on luggage larger than a small handbag or backpack, a move that is sparking significant backlash from passengers. The new fees apply to those booking basic-economy tickets, with charges for carry-on bags starting at $25 for the first piece and $36 for a second bag. Travelers who fail to pay in advance or during check-in will face an additional $46 surcharge at the airport.
This policy, set to take effect soon, mirrors similar changes adopted by other budget carriers, which have introduced extra fees for carry-on luggage beyond a personal item. According to Air Canada, the move aims to align its fare structure with other Canadian airlines, but it has drawn strong criticism, including from government officials like Federal Transport Minister Anita Anand, who called the fees “unacceptable.”
As air carriers continue to increase fees for baggage (both checked and carry-on), passengers are raising concerns about the affordability of air travel. Along with the carry-on fees, Air Canada also plans to charge low-fare passengers for changes to automatically assigned seats, further intensifying customer frustration.
This shift in airline baggage policies highlights the growing trend of additional charges for services that were once included in base ticket prices, raising questions about the future of budget air travel.
