The Smarrellis, both in their mid-70s and of Italian descent, decided to settle in the coastal town of Scalea, Calabria, in December 2023. Before moving, their monthly expenses in the US ranged from $4,800 to $5,000. Now, living in Italy, they spend about $1,200 a month.

Finding Their Dream Home
They purchased a 1,500-square-foot, three-bedroom home in Scalea for €150,000 (around $162,000) after seeing an ad posted by an American real estate agency. The couple spent an additional €80,000 (about $86,500) renovating the property, adding new plumbing, electric systems, and two bathrooms.

Choosing Italy for a Better Life
The couple was drawn to the quality of life, scenic views, and slower pace in Italy. They realized that similar coastal properties in the US would have been far more expensive, likely costing between $1 million to $2 million in California or the Eastern Seaboard.

Lower Costs, Higher Quality of Life
Italy’s lower cost of living allowed the Smarrellis to enjoy a more comfortable lifestyle. Their expenses include dining out, which costs them between $400 to $500 a month, while utilities, internet, and phone services are significantly cheaper than in the US.
