Karachi police have identified the attacker as Shah Fahad, who had registered the vehicle used in the attack in his name as early as September 2023.
Timeline of the Attack
Fahad, along with two accomplices, arrived in Karachi on December 3, 2023. They stayed at a hotel in the Preedy area, briefly left, and then returned to the city on October 4, 2024. Fahad checked into a second hotel at 10:47 AM, and checked out just hours before the blast, which occurred around noon on the same day.
Investigation and Arrests
Following the explosion, authorities established a three-kilometre security perimeter around the site. Several individuals have been detained for questioning. Investigators are also examining how sensitive information regarding the movements of Chinese engineers may have been leaked, which is part of a broader inquiry into the incident.
Claim of Responsibility
The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist group advocating for independence in Balochistan, has claimed responsibility for the attack. The BLA has previously targeted Chinese interests in the region, accusing the federal government of exploiting Balochistan’s resources.
Security Measures and Government Response
In preparation for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Islamabad, the Pakistani government has pledged to enhance security for visiting dignitaries, including Chinese officials. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his commitment to ensuring the safety of Chinese nationals, emphasizing the ongoing security challenges in the region due to rising tensions in Balochistan.
